description

In 1990–91, Biggs Army Airfield supported the large-scale airlift of forces and equipment deployed for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Biggs Airfield continues to host C-5A Galaxies and other Air Force airlift aircraft which transport personnel and equipment on rotation to Southwest Asia and other theaters of operation.

Biggs Field is the site of the annual "Amigo Airshow", held in October. The airfield is usually packed with spectators, as the attractions and army equipment encourage people to attend. A popular performer is the United States Navy Blue Angels, who make special appearances to perform aerobatic maneuvers for the crowd.

The story of this photo was written on the back. "This picture taken June 1920 at Ft. Bliss, Texas, at the machine gun troop barracks (Barbershop). Horse shows barb wire scars and has mean temper (sic) using a Spanish curb bit to keep him in line notice his ears. We had just completed a 200 mile mounted hike 21 days to complete Elephant Butte dam N.M. and return. Lost 10lb on that hike all hard work, even mounted. Earl A. Buckhart"

Born in Arcadia, Florida, Garner served an enlistment in the United States Marine Corps before attending the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a B.A. degree in political science in 1962. He also holds a Master's in public administration from Harvard University.

Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1962, Garner served two tours in Vietnam, and later led two air defense units in Germany. He also served as deputy commanding general at Fort Bliss, Texas. Garner helped to develop the Patriot missile system and commanded missile batteries during the Gulf War. After the war he was put in charge of securing Kurdish areas in Iraq. He was later named commander of the U.S. Army Space and Strategic Defense Command (working primarily on President Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative missile shield program), and concluded his Army career as Assistant Vice Chief of Staff, retiring in 1997 at the rank of lieutenant general.

This statue, Air Defenders, is by Steve Streadbeck and is located on Main Post just inside the Pershing Gate. the 'First to Fire' statue was erected in 1989 to honor all air defenders. The faces of the brave soldiers reflect the intensity of combat and courage, competence and dedication typical of the young men and women who serve the Air Defense Artillery to
this day. In 2010 it was relocated to Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

The Fort Bliss Museum is located on Main Post near the Marshall Gate off Fred Wilson Road. When I was stationed at Bliss in the late 1960s, the missiles on display were scattered around the Reception Area on Main Post. Since these pictures were taken, some have been moved to another post altogether.
