Conrey Bryson in his book The Land Where We Live, p.21 describes it as El Paso's first industry. "Hart's Mill was established on the Rio Grande in 1849. Here at a historic fall line in the river's descent, its water was diverted into the "acequia madre" the mother canal that distributed water to home and farms."
There is a Texas State historic marker that describes this site.
