William T. Smith

William T. Smith "Tío Billy" nació en Kentucky el 18 de abril de 1820. Smith fue considerado como el Patriarca del Valle. Se cree que llegó a El Paso alrededor de 1850 desde Santa Fe, Nuevo México. Smith recibió una concesión de tierras en el río Mora por parte del gobierno mexicano. Más tarde sería conocido como Scolly-Land Grant. Smith también sirvió en las fuerzas de la Unión durante la Guerra Civil. Antes de mudarse a El Paso, formó una sociedad con Norris Colburn y la empresa era conocida como Colburn and Smith. La empresa se disolvió después. Era generoso dentro de sus círculos, pero puede haber sido considerado como poco empresarial. En 1854, compró la antigua estancia Ponce de León a los herederos de la finca. Vendía o regalaba pequeñas parcelas de tierra a particulares para la creación de empresas. En 1856, cuando Josiah F. Crosby trajo a su esposa de Austin, Smith le dio tres acres de tierra como regalo de boda. En 1860 Smith fue asesinado de una diligencia luego de ser proyectado de ella. Smith era un orgulloso albañil y afiliado a El Paso Lodge No. 130 en sus inicios. Además, Smith alquiló a la casa de campo para el propósito de las reuniones.
