In 1930s, my grandfather Juan C. Salazar worked as an Elevator Operator at the Hotel Hussmann. He was a welterweight boxer and would train by jumping rope at a park nearby and one day he noticed my grandmother, sitting on a park bench reading a book. Apparently they were in the same area everyday. After jumping rope, he would jog past her on the park bench and not wanting to disturb her reading, he decided to quietly drop off a little chocolate bar each time he jogged past. This made her smile. They soon got to know each other and what a nice surprise it was to learn that she too worked nearby at the Hotel Hussmann, as a maid and laundress, in housekeeping.
