Low & Slow: Lowrider Culture On The Border
En El Paso, Texas o Chuco, Tejas el Lowrider es mas que un pasatiempo de fin de semana. Lowriding es una forma de vida. No es una subcultura de la experiencia mexicoamericana, sino parte de una compleja forma de historia vivida y cultura visual. Es una iteración única de una tradición profundamente arraigada en el automovilismo. En El Paso, el lowrider puede rastrear sus primeras raíces en la década de 1940, particularmente después de la segunda guerra mundial. Podría decirse que la tendencia se origino en California y se abrió camino hacia Texas. Con el resurgimiento de la producción de automóviles a gran escala después de la guerra, los vehículos asequibles permitieron a la clase trabajadora adquirir sus propias ranflas. Para la década de 1970, lowriding era un conocido pasatiempo que representaba una marca única de “americanismo”. Los lowriders también eran parte de una manifestación cultural más grande que incluía pachucos y pachucas con su estilo de traje zoot y la manera de pasearse en auto. Esto incluía una afinidad por escuchar melodías “viejitas”. El estilo de vida lowrider con todo su garbo y expresión exuberante es también una forma de libre determinación en el panorama visual estadounidense: la creencia de que los mexicano-estadounidenses resisten la estética dominante en favor de su propio canon. En otras palabras, manejar bajo sus propios términos, despacio, pegado al psio, y con ‘stilo.
