Reverendo Joseph W. Tays - El Paso, Tejas

Reverendo Joseph Tays, un misionero Episcopal que fundó la primera iglesia protestante de El Paso, llegó a El Paso en 1870, un viudo con dos hijos. C. L. Sonnichsen registra la historia que un mes después de que comenzó su misión en El Paso, Tays envió un mensaje a Austin que estaba "haciendo todo lo posible." Tays estaba aprendiendo español y al menos un tabernero había cerrado sus puertas y ha encontrado otra vocación por su culpa. Él no sólo predicó y enseñó, trabajó en el sector inmobiliario y sirvió el condado como topógrafo. Tays puso la primera piedra de la iglesia episcopal de la primera de San Clemente el día de Navidad en 1881. El historiador local y autor Leon Metz escribe que después de haber llevado a cabo el funeral de una víctima de la viruela, Tays contrajo la enfermedad temida sí mismo y murió después de sufrir de una semana. A última hora de la tarde del 21 de noviembre, dos hombres de la ciudad envolvieron el cuerpo de Parson Tay en una sábana y lo entregaron rápidamente a Concordia. Fue enterrado sin ceremonia en el medio de la noche durante una tormenta de lluvia violenta.
