José Antonio Escajeda era miembro una de las familias pioneras de El Paso, que llegaron de España. Los Escajedas llegaron a El Paso en la decada de los 1890. Vivieron en la calle Campbell y posteriormente en el 1418 del blvd. E. Yandell. En 1887 Escajeda inició su carera política siendo elegido y asignado a varios puestos públicos, entre ellos Secretario Adjunto de la Corte de Distrito del Condado de El Paso (1887 - 1888); Secretario Adjunto del Condado de El Paso (1888 - 1892); Secretario de la Ciudad de El Paso (1901 - 1903); Comisionado Sanitario de El Paso (1905 - 1907); Asistente del jefe de policia (1908); y Auditor del Condado (1911 - 1912 de 1917 - 1931).
