La segunda bomba de vapor del Departamento de Bomberos de El Paso se construyó en 1901. En el centro hay una caldera de agua a carbón que proporciona la presión para bombear agua a través de la manguera contra incendios. El sistema de agua original de El Paso fue alimentado por la gravedad con baja presión, por lo que la tecnología avanzada de lucha contra incendios como este motor permitió a las empresas construir edificios más altos (de cuatro pisos) que aún podrían protegerse del fuego. Uno de los recuerdos de la infancia del artista de El Paso, Tom Lea, fue el del camión de bomberos del Departamento de Bomberos, tirado por dos caballos negros y humo ondulante, que galopaba más allá de su hogar sobre la Río Grande. Más tarde, cuando su padre era alcalde, visitó una estación de bomberos y se le permitió deslizarse por el poste.
