La máquina de escribir manual moderna fue la creación de muchos inventores a finales de los 1800. Las tiendas de suministros para oficinas, como El Paso Typewriter Co., que donaron estas máquinas, aceptaban el valor de cambio de modelos más antiguos funcionales por los últimos diseños. El Paso Typewriter Co. apareció por primera vez en el Directorio de la Ciudad de El Paso en 1931, pero mediante la compra de una tienda más antigua contenía mercancías que databan de principios de 1900. El teclado QWERTY, todavía usado hoy en las computadoras, fue diseñado para que las letras más frecuentemente usadas en conjunto dentro de palabras fueran lo más alejadas unas de las otras en el teclado. Los mecanógrafos veloces a menudo enredaban (o chocaban) la letra de imprenta con sus soportes largos del metal si las letras estaban demasiado cerca.
