Se fue a Richmond , Virginia , y convenció a Jefferson Davis que adoptara un plan grandioso para apoderarse no sólo de Nuevo México sino también de Colorado y California para la Confederación . Encargado general de brigada , Sibley fue a San Antonio , donde ayudó a organizar tres regimientos de los texanos en la brigada de Sibley . Luego lanzó una invasión de Nuevo México , marchó con su ejército a través del oeste de Texas a Fort Bliss, y derrotó a los federales bajo el coronel Edward RS Canby cerca de Fort Craig en la sangrienta batalla de Valverde en 21 de febrero 1862 . Sibley además diseñó una nueva tienda de 12 campanas de campana, fácil de empacar y utilizada por muchos años por los ejércitos estadounidense y británico.
