Samuel Schutz

Los primeros Judios fueron atraídos a la zona, ya que se convirtió en un centro para el comercio internacional. Los hermanos Samuel y José Schutz fueron de los primeros. Samuel fue primero, llegando en 1856 y la apertura de un negocio de abarrotes; su hermano pronto lo siguió. Ernest Angerstein instaló al sur del río, en México, la apertura de un almacén de ramos generales. A pesar de que El Paso se encuentra en la esquina oeste del sur del estado, la secesión y la guerra civil sin resolver de la pequeña ciudad. Los hermanos Schutz se opusieron a la secesión mientras Angerstein terminó poniendose del lado de el ejército que estuvo a cargo de la zona. Cuando los soldados confederados controlarón El Paso, Angerstein expreso apoyar la causa del Sur. Una vez que las fuerzas de la Unión se hicieron cargo, Angerstein expresó su apoyo a los Estados Unidos. Cuando Angerstein consiguió un contrato del Ejército de los Estados Unidos para proporcionar el maíz para las tropas, sus competidores se quejaron de que él estaba a favor de los confederados.
