In the early 1900s the National Humane Society Alliance donated 125 watering troughs/fountains to communities around the U.S. This fountain near courthouse in El Paso TX was one of them. It was received in 1908. This ingenious design has water flowing from a lion's mouth into a basin of polished Maine franite. An upper bowl provides water for horses and mules. There are four small cups at the base for dogs and cats. Source Magoffin Home Walking Tour pamphlet 2024
