Lydia Patterson came to El Paso in 1883, married Millard Patterson in 1886 and became interested in missionary work in Segundo Barrio. She died of cancer in 1909. Her husband, a wealthy El Paso lawyer and property owner, donated the land and buildings for what became Lydia Patterson Institute.
