En 1936, Tom Lea tenía su estudio en el segundo piso de este edificio anteriormente llamado Edificio W.S. Hill. Lea construyó un andamio y trabajó en proyectos gubernamentales, incluyendo los murales en el edificio Hall of State Building en Dallas y el "Paso del Norte" en el histórico Palacio de Justicia Federal en El Paso. En su estudio, Tom Lea conoció por primera vez al editor y diseñador de libros Carl Hertzog, el escultor español Urbici Soler, y el conocido escritor texano J. Frank Dobie.
