Construida en 1930 en el sitio donde se ubicaba el histórico Hotel Sheldon (sede no oficial de los partidarios de la Revolución mexicana), la torre Art Decó de 19 pisos realizada en hormigón y ladrillos con un techo piramidal de cobre fue el primer hotel Hilton de gran altura. Esta gema de la arquitectura una vez albergó a la futura Señorita White Diamonds en persona, Liz Taylor, quien habitó el penthouse durante su breve matrimonio, de 1950 a 1951, con el heredero de Hilton, Nicky. Luego de que en 1963 cambiaran su nombre a Hotel Plaza, el hotel cerró en 1991, aunque según lo que se dijo, sería renovado.
