En 1895 el sheriff de El Paso intentó hacer la ciudad un poco menos mortal al prohibir el porte de armas de fuego dentro de los límites de la ciudad. En agosto de ese año, la novia de Hardin fue sorprendido con una pistola en la ciudad y arrestado por la oficina de El Paso, John Selman. Hardin, que nunca había aprendido por completo para controlar su temperamento vicioso, se enojó. Los transeúntes sobrecarga amenazarlo Selman por molestar a su chica. Al poco tiempo, en este día en 1895, Selman fue a buscar a Hardin. Él encontró el famoso pistolero tirando los dados en el bar del salón Acme.
