S.H. Kress & Co. (1896-1981) fue uno de los más prósperos comerciantes de tiendas de variedad del siglo 20. Aunque nunca fue la cadena más grande, Kress mantenía las ventas más altas por cada tienda de cualquier tienda de cinco y diez centavos por más de 20 años, a partir de 1927. La creación de una división de arquitectura dentro de la empresa jugó un papel clave en atraer a los clientes y facilitar las ventas.
