La reunión de los presidentes William Howard Taft y Porfirio Díaz en El Paso y Ciudad Juárez el 16 de octubre de 1909, el primero en la historia entre un presidente de los Estados Unidos y un presidente de México, fue descrito por la prensa local como el "El más memorable evento diplomático en la historia de las dos naciones". Un historiador de El Paso ha añadido que era un "verdadero desfile de esplendor militar, brillo social, formalidad elegante, protocolo oficial y el fervor patriótico."
