Mt. Christo Rey
Montana de Cristo Rey
Montana de Cristo Rey
It is breathtaking to walk the pilgrimage on Christ the King Day. One of the most iconic images in El Paso is the statue of Mount Cristo Rey -- the Christ of the Rockies. The magnificent monument overlooks three states and two nations and was only made possible by Catholic families from San José del Rio Church in Smeltertown and their priest, Monsignor Lourdes F. Costa. The Cristo Rey peak, 4,576 feet above sea level, is said to have been a lookout for Apaches. The original name of the mountain was Pico del Rodadero del Cerro de Muleros.
