Pero su fama como pintor fue eclipsada por su fama de medir más de ocho pies de altura. Jacob Rubén Ehrlich, nacido en Denver en 1906, se mudó a El Paso con sus padres inmigrantes judíos alemanes en 1912. Nacido pequeño, a menos de cuatro libras, Erlich permaneció de tamaño normal hasta la edad de 8 años, cuando empezó a crecer rápidamente. Para cuando tenía 10 años, medía más de 6 pies de altura. Erlich fue directamente desde El Paso High School a Hollywood donde apareció en cerca de 50 películas mudas.
