En 1938, La Primera Dama Eleanor Roosevelt visita a La Escuela de Minas y Metalurgia (ahora conocida como UTEP). Roosevelt elogió las recientes renovaciones pagadas por fondos federales de recuperación, además de haber complementado a los murales pintados por las escuelas de Works Progress Administration (WPA) (La Administración para Obras de Progreso), arte ya perdida por renovaciones posteriores.
