Hardin reclamó haber matado a 42 hombres, pero los periódicos del día le habían atribuido a él sólo 27 matanzas hasta ese punto. Mientras en la prisión, Hardin estudió derecho y comenzó a escribir una autobiografía objetivamente propensa (en la cual el continuó trabajando hasta su muerte). Fue liberado en 1894. En agosto de 1895, Hardin fue asesinado a tiros por John Selman, Sr. en una cantina de El Paso.
