Pancho Villa (1878-1923) fue un revolucionario mexicano y un líder que defendió a los pobres. Aunque fue un asesino y un bandido, muchos lo recuerdan como un héroe popular. Nacido en el seno de una familia pobre, él aprendió la relación entre los ricos y los pobres en México a finales del siglo XIX de una manera dura. Después de haberle disparado al dueño de la hacienda en la que su familia vivió y trabajó a la edad de 16 años, Villa corrió de la ley y se convirtió en el líder de un grupo de bandidos. Debido a sus habilidades de un guerrillero luchador, llamó la atención de los hombres que estaban planeando una revolución. Ya que Porfirio Díaz, el Presidente de México, había creado gran parte de los problemas actuales a los pobres y Francisco Madero prometió cambios para las clases inferiores, Pancho Villa se unió a Madero y se convirtió en un líder efectivo en el ejército revolucionario de octubre de 1910 a mayo de 1911. Junto con Madero y Pascual Orozco, dirigió las tropas durante la Batalla de Juárez, lo que llevó a la renuncia de Porfirio Díaz. Sin embargo, en mayo de 1911, él renunció del comando debido a las diferencias que tuvo con Orozco. Villa se casó con María Luz Corral y trató de establecerse. Cuando Orozco inició una nueva rebelión contra Madero, quien se había convertido en Presidente de México, Villa apoyó a Madero junto con el General Victoriano Huerta. Cuando Huerta se convirtió en oponente de Madero, eventualmente lo asesinó para reclamar la presidencia por sí mismo, Villa se alió con Venustiano Carranza para combatir contra Huerta. Pancho Villa fue extremadamente exitoso, pero en el verano de 1914, Villa y Carranza, se convirtieron en enemigos y pelearon uno contra el otro en los próximos años. Los Estados Unidos apoyo a Carranza, lo cual es la razón porque Villa atacó la Ciudad de Columbus, Nuevo México, en 1916. Su ataque fue el primero en suelo americano desde 1812. Bajo el liderazgo del General Pershing, los EEUU envió a miles de soldados a la frontera en la búsqueda de Pancho Villa (en Expedición de Castigo), pero nunca lo atraparon. Cuando Adolfo De la Huerta se convirtió en el presidente temporal de México en el año 1920, Villa aceptó retirarse de la vida revolucionaria pero fue baleado en 1923.

Early 1960's, I saw a picture in my Grandfather's metal suitcase. It was of a man dressed like Villa or one of his bandits. No other info. I kick myself nowadays for not asking questions . But I was a child. My Grandfather's surname was, Barrera.
