Cathedral High School alumnus awarded WSMR Hall of Fame Award

Cathedral High School alumnus awarded WSMR Hall of Fame Award. Luis Marques (standing left) retired System Analysist from the United States Army Air Defense Artillery school (USAADAsch) at Fort Bliss, Texas, stops by the table of Mrs. Lorraine Portillo and her daughter Barbara McMillan to pass the time of day and possibly tell them a joke. Luis also graduated from Cathedral HS and UTEP and recently retired from Ft. Bliss. [1] Fort Bliss is a United States Army post in the U.S. states of New Mexico and Texas, with its headquarters located in El Paso, Texas. Named in honor of LTC William Bliss (1815-1853), a mathematical genius who was the son-in-law of President Zachary Taylor, Ft. Bliss has an area of about 1,700 square miles (4,400 km2), it is the Army's second-largest installation, behind the adjacent White Sands Missile Range. It is FORSCOM's (United States Army Forces Command) largest installation, and has the Army's largest Maneuver Area (992,000 acres) ahead of the National Training Center, (642,000 acres). Part of the post in El Paso County, Texas, is a census-designated place; it had a population of 8,591 at the 2010 census. Fort Bliss provides the largest contiguous tract (1,500 sq mi or 3,900 km2) of restricted airspace in the Continental United States. The airspace is used for missile and artillery training and testing.

[1]White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) is a United States Army military testing area of almost 3,200 sq mi (8,300 km2) in parts of five counties in southern New Mexico. The largest military installation in the United States, WSMR and the 600,000-acre (2,400 km2) McGregor Range Complex at Fort Bliss to the south (southeast Tularosa Basin and on Otero Mesa are contiguous areas for military testing. On 9 July 1945, the White Sands Proving Ground was established for testing German and American long range rockets. Just seven days later, the first atomic bomb test, code named Trinity was exploded at Trinity Site, near the north boundary of the range. Andres Portillo was selected as recipient for the prestigious WSMR Hall of Fame award October 23, 2013. Andres is a Cathedral High School graduate of 1955. He and his five brothers and one sister attended parochial grammar schools in El Paso, Texas, approximately 50 miles from WSMR, NM. Here lies the story of Andy in pictures and text on the Photographical Digital Exhibit Digie.org, the first of its kind in El Paso, Texas and the second in the world. Andres is shown standing next to his wife Irma Portillo left. Next to Andres Portillo is Mr. Frank Chavez Chief of Staff at WSMR, a fellow employee at the luncheon held in Andy's honor at the WSMR Officers Club.
