In Oct 1879, five Sisters of Loretto opened St. Joseph's Academy in San Elizario, Tx. Students and boarders came from down the valley, El Paso, and Mexico. The nuns were expected to teach as many subjects as they could and as long as they could manage to have an attendance. Superior General Praxedes described the school's progress in an 1881 letter. The Southern Pacific Railroad reached El Paso in 1881. Correspondence from Sr. Madalen Dietz in 1892 provides information on the decision to transfer the nuns and students to El Paso, TX since the railroad lines bypassed San Elizario.
