According to Women's Dept. El Paso Chamber of Commerce 2013 yearbook, Mabel Welch in 1930's was instrumental in obtaining site of UTEP ZTA sorority lodge that is now Alumni Lodge.
About 1942 architect Mabel Welch did redesign of Union Station downtown. In 1940 the Woman's Dept. of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce undertook a campaign to redo the railroad station's appearance using southwestern design. Contactor R.E. Mc Kee covered red brick w/ stucco painted a creamy white color. The spire on the bell tower was removed and replaced with a low pitched roof.
