Mrs. C. Jane Hawkins christening the USS Hawkins
Mrs. Hawkins was the mother of 1st Lt. William Deane Hawkins, who died in the WWII Battle of Tarawa on Nov. 21, 1943. The Deane Hawkins Detachment of the Marine Corps was named after him as well as the airfield on Tarawa and the destroyer USS Hawkins, which was christened by his mother.
