Mrs. C. Jane Hawkins christening the USS Hawkins

Mrs. Hawkins was the mother of 1st Lt. William Deane Hawkins, who died in the WWII Battle of Tarawa on Nov. 21, 1943. The Deane Hawkins Detachment of the Marine Corps was named after him as well as the airfield on Tarawa and the destroyer USS Hawkins, which was christened by his mother.

Many El Pasoans have lost members of their families to military conflicts. But the money from military installations also funds much of our community's business.
