Five Points history in murals

El Paso Police Headquarters, 911 N. Raynor St., El Paso, Texas, 79903 Owner: City of El Paso Public Art Program (http://www.elpasotexas.gov/mcad/publicart.asp) Date: 2013 Placement: exterior walls Collection: City of El Paso Museums & Cultural Affairs Department Artwork Type: mural paintings (visual works) Material: acrylic paint Description: The mural at the Police Headquarters West Wall aims to communicate to the viewer the colorful history of the Five Points area of El Paso, and in doing so reflects the architecture, character, and local environment. The design moves chronologically from left to right, detailing on each panel the successes our community leaders of the time left for us to enjoy. The first panel (far left) depicts the Federal Copper Company located in the current Manhattan Heights neighborhood. The second panel depicts architect Mabel Welch in the center, who was the first female architect in El Paso, and one of very few females in her industry across the nation in the early 1920’s. The third panel depicts architect Otto Thurman, another one of El Paso's early architectural leaders. Thurman was known to say, "El Paso is the greatest city its size in the world". The fourth and final panel pays homage to local artist Tom Lea and Price's Creamery. Lea went on to become one of El Paso's best-known artists.
