EPCC Enrolls 901 Students for First Year
Startup funding for the college was acquired when Senator Joe Christie, the Board of Trustees and citizens of the community requested state financial assistance to open the doors of a college that would provide high quality and affordable education for all students in the region. The 62nd Texas Legislature appropriated funds and El Paso Community College (EPCC) became a reality, enrolling 901 students in eight vocational-technical programs and four college/university transfer programs in September of that year. Dr. Alfredo de los Santos Jr. was named EPCC’s first President. Meanwhile, while EPCC had received State Appropriations, the college still needed property taxes to create and maintain facilities—a proposal that was not approved by the initial vote.
