Dick Savitt
Dick Savitt
The second installation of El Paso High Centennial Commemoration Tiles on a wall adjacent to the Library/Cafeteria Building. The lyrics on the center art for that installation are the familiar refrain from "The Orange & Black," El Paso High School's original and unique fight song composed by brother of one of the graduates in El Paso High's Class of 1887. One tile depicted is in dedication to Clarence D. "CD" Jarvis, head baskeball coach of EPHS from 1944 through 1985. Jarvis lead the Tigers to their fourth state championship in basketball and won additional Regional Championships in 1953, 56, 72, 73, and 83. Basketball Hall of Fame Coach from Texas Western/UTEP, Don Haskins, referred to CD Jarvis as "The Dean of High School Coaches." Immediately below the Jarvis tile is a tribute to EPHS Outstanding Ex-Student of 2014, Dick Savitt, a tennis champion at EPHS, in college, and champion of the Australian Open and The All England Tennis Championships (aka: Wemboldon) in 1951. He was rated number 2 in the world of tennis that year.
