EPWater's 2018 Engineer Spotlight Alfonso Sierra

EPWater's 2018 Engineer Spotlight Alfonso Sierra

Alfonso Sierra Watewater Collections Systems Manager Alfonso recognizes and appreciates the importance of all engineering jobs. As early as the age of 10, Alfonso knew he would become an engineer. While his initial passion was for heavy equipment and construction, his life path would lead him to the joys of wastewater management at El Paso Water. As the Wastewater Collections Systems Manager, Alfonso is responsible for everything regarding wastewater as it makes its way from houses and businesses to wastewater plants. What he loves about his job is the vast range of activities that are performed on a daily basis… everything from cleaning and maintenance, to pipe assessments and repair. “You don’t know what the day will bring,” Alfonso said. “There’s always a decision to make or solution to come up with.” Alfonso credits his time as an engineer and 35 years with the utility for his ability to keep the wastewater system running efficiently and effectively. It’s with this engineering background that he applies a detailed understanding of water and technology to a big picture system, all while balancing health and environmental considerations. Although proud of his engineering background, he humbly says that young people need to find their own path to follow. He encourages them to find what they like and then seek out more information. A favorite quote of Alfonso’s is from Confucius, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
