Roberts-Banner Bldg, Kress Bldg and Plaza Hotel
The image captures three of the most important landmarks of the historic downtown area. The Plaza Hotel is a fine example of the Art Deco Style popular in the 1920s. It is marked by the red bricks and the its green terracotta roof. Opened in 1930 and designed by the renowned architect Henry C. Trost, it was one of the most luxurious and state-of-the-art hotels. It had to close in 1991. Another building by Trost is the Roberts-Banner building to the left. It exemplifies the use of reinforced concrete, also very popular at that time. It opened in 1910. The Kress building in the middle is the newest building (from 1938) but sticks out due to its marvelous decoration. It was designed by Edward Sibbert.
