The picture from 1976 shows some of the historic buildings in the downtown area. In the middle, one can see the Plaza Hotel, which was built in 1930 and is remarkable because of its red brick front and the copper roof. To its right, the Mills building is visible. As the Plaza Hotel, it was built by Henry C. Trost and was in the 1910s one of the highest all-concrete buildings. In 1974 the Mills Building's windows were replaced with vertical bands of mirrored glass, radically altering its appearance. In the front of the building, to the right of the image, San Jacinto Plaza can be seen. Parts of the Cortez building are in the lower right corner. In front of the Plaza, another Trost building made out of reinforced concrete is visible, the Roberts-Banner building. The tower behind it belongs to the Kress building, which is well-known for its funky exterior. To the left of the Plaza the 1 Texas Tower can be seen, and behind it are parts of the Paso del Norte Hotel (now Camino Real).
