The Cathedral was founded on December 8, 1659, it was dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron of the city, and has been seat of the Bishop of the Diocese since 1957. Most of the cathedral was rebuilt between 1975 and 1977 after it was destroyed by fire.
