Church of St Clement
Iglesia de San Clemente
Church of St Clement
The picture shows the Church of St. Clement. The first Episcopal church in El Paso was built in 1870. It was named after the son of Gaylord Clarke, who was a pioneer and an Episcopal layman and who had initiated the first Episcopal community in El Paso, and after the third Bishop of Rome. This mission was the first Protestant church between Santa Fe, New Mexico and Brownsville, Texas. In 1907 the cornerstone of the present church was laid. Designed in the Neo-Gothic style, the beauty of the church was enhanced by many stained glass windows and a Tiffany glass mosaic. The Church of St. Clement, recalling its own beginning as a mission, in turn helped to start St. Anne’s Mission, St. Alban’s, St. Christopher’s, All Saints, and St. Francis on the Hill. On September 16, 2007, the congregation voted overwhelmingly to separate from the Episcopal Diocese of the Rio Grande. The congregation is now a member of the Anglican Diocese of the Southwest in the Anglican Church of North America.
