Local Boxer, Teacher, and Community Activist Mike Martinez
Golden Gloves champion and San Antonio native Mike Martinez arrived in El Paso while stationed at Biggs Airforce Base at the age of 20. He met his wife Concepcion while dancing in Juarez and they were married in 1954. As a Spanish teacher at Henderson Middle School, Mike not only taught his students the Spanish Language but about Chicano culture and the importance of cultural heritage. An active proponent of Chicano Civil Rights through the 60s and 70s, Mike remained a scholar, athlete, and role model for El Paso youth all his life. He passed away at the age of 83 and is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
