Joseph Magoffin

Joseph Magoffin, El Paso mayor and civic leader, was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. He was a four-term mayor of El Paso and a county judge. In 1856 he joined his father at the site of present El Paso, Texas, where the elder Magoffin had settled after the Mexican War. The Magoffins were militant supporters of secession. Image Description: Black and white photograph shows an older Joseph Magoffin from his chest up, directly looking at the camera. His body is tilted slightly to the right and he wears a dark suit standing in front of a dark background. Magoffin has a long white beard up to his chest with sideburns, a mustache, and thick arched eyebrows that decorate his face. He barely has any hair on his head.
