Y. M. C. A. Building - El Paso, Texas
The postcard shows the old Y.M.C.A. Building. Y.M.C.A. stands for “Young Men’s Improvement Society”. This society focuses on strengthening the community through well-being and fitness, camps, family time, swim, sports and play, and other activities for people of all ages, incomes and abilities. The YMCA of El Paso was organized January 31, 1886 by a handful of young men who met at the First Baptist Church. It was in a bare room on San Antonio Street and their activities consisted mostly of prayer meetings. They later moved to San Francisco Street and established quarters above a livery stable. From 1909 to 1957 the society was accommodated in this building at the corner of Oregon and Missouri Streets.
