Second Baptist Church
Second Baptist Church
The Second Baptist Church was organized in 1884 through the efforts of the State Missionary Baptist Home Mission Board of New York, which sought to establish black churches in Texas. Rev. E.M. Griggs from Dallas arrived in El Paso and found five black Baptists in the community. This group rented a small one-room adobe on South Stanton Street between San Antonio and Overland in 1885 and established one of the major black congregations in El Paso. The current church building was constructed in 1906, at 401 S. Virginia Street.
