Immaculate Conception Church
Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción

Immaculate Conception Church

Immaculate Conception Church, 118 North Campbell Street, was built in 1893. Prior to that time, El Paso Catholics who wished to attend Mass were obliged to cross into Juarez, Mexico. Father Carlos Pinto, S.J. built the church and since then it was expanded several times. When the Diocese of El Paso was created in March 1914, Immaculate Conception became the Provisional Cathedral until the opening of St. Patrick in 1917. In 1959, Immaculate Conception became part of the diocese, ending 67 years of Jesuit administration. Since 1971, a Spanish mass is offered as well. Under pastor Francisco Herrera (1977) the church became home of the Diocesan Apostolate for the Deaf with a Sunday noon Mass signed for the hearing impaired. The colored postcard shows the church in the beginning of the 20th century.
