Jackson Polk - Film Producer

El Paso native Jackson (Jack) Polk spent 27 years in Washington, D.C., where he was a full-time TV technician and news cameraman. In the 1980s, he formed his own TV production company in Washington, providing satellite news services for many foreign networks covering U.S. news. Wendy and Jackson moved to El Paso in 1997, and Wendy is now the editor of the weekly business and lifestyle journal, El Paso Inc. The couple’s 25-year-old son, Andrew, is a 2011 graduate of Knox College in Illinois, and a fulltime TV reporter at ABC7 KVIA TV in El Paso. Jackson has produced more than 50 historical videos, including more than a dozen about the history and heritage of the El Paso region. Jackson appeared on the History Channel in December 2010 on Brad Meltzer’s Decoded as an expert on the US Capitol Cornerstone. Jackson is also the producer and co-host of the El Paso History Radio Show, which airs live from 10 am to noon Saturdays on KTSM-AM 690 in El Paso and now streams live worldwide on the internet.

Jack I just heard your history moment about the “A” on the mountain. It is or at least was for many years almost a totem to those of us who went to Austin. One time in the mid 70’s, when I was teaching there, I was at a school club dinner. The speaker was a local artist who brought up the “need” to take all the letters off the mountains. Boy did that go over like a lead balloon with the Austin audience. Years later, when I was teaching at another school, a student asked why the home side of Austin’s stadium did not abut the school as it does almost everywhere else. I said I believe it was so that Austin students could see the A when it was lit. I do have a question for you. Almost invariably during the third quarter of a home game someone would be up on the mountain kicking the fire cans over. You and the rest of Phi Chi would exit the stadium to defend the A. Was that staged or did it just always happen?

Knew jack back at Crockett elementary. Smart guy good to see doing well and moved back to El Paso. I have visited once since leaving for California in1964. Love the southwest and desert! Felipe Hernandez
