Apolonio Reyes - Company E - 1940

Reyes was a member of Rifle Company E, 141st U.S. Army Infantry, 36th Division, which was a National Guard unit activated in 1940. It had a vital role in the liberation of Rome during World War II. Died September 25, 2017, he was 96 years old. The company is documented as one of the toughest fighting units in the Army and consisted of mostly Hispanics from Bowie, Austin and El Paso high schools.

Dave Gutierrez gives lecture on Company E - downtown El Paso, Texas. Dave Gutierrez to left of the image is author of "Patriots From The Barrio." Lecture took place on August 10, 2017 - El Paso Museum of History. Company E was comprised of soldiers from Texas, mostly from the Segundo Barrio and Bowie High School of El Paso, Texas. The only Mexican-American unit in the army during World War II, who served bravery in the liberation of Rome during the war.

Photograph was taken at Camp Bowie a United States National Guard training center located in west central Texas on the southern outskirts of Brownwood. Photograph is of Alfredo Lozano who received the purple heart. Company E, was comprised of soldiers from El Paso, Texas, mostly from the Segundo Barrio and Bowie High School.On a mission to Monte Cassino between Jan. 20-23, 1944, its members were ordered to cross the Rapido River in southern Italy. They walked into a fight with German forces that's now considered the greatest military blunder of World War II. Those who weren't killed were wounded or captured
