Annie’s second husband, Barney Riggs, was also a gunman with a wide reputation who went to prison in Yuma, Arizona for a killing and was pardoned from Yuma Territorial Prison for helping save the warden during an attempted prison break. Ermine Peck McKay Hourigan - 1926
Mother of Thomas McKay - Founder - El Paso Boxing - Martial Arts Hall of Fame's. September 8, 1907 - August 8, 2003. Ermine E. Hourigan 95, left us on August 8 - born in Galesburg, Illinois on September 8, 1907. Her parents were Charles and Clara Peck. This pioneer lady came to West Texas in a covered wagon. The family settled in Balmorhea, Texas in the hopes of a good farm life. She lived, and loved to recall, the colorful history of this region. Later, In a move to El Paso, Texas, Ermine watched from an El Paso street as General Pershing's Punitive Expedition proudly crossed into Mexico, then returned tattered and torn. But as a young girl, she was one of many American's captured and held for ransom by Mexican bandidos. However, she was abandoned in the Chihuahua desert - as she was just too much trouble for them to handle! In the twenties she was a "Flapper Girl" at Sul Ross College in Alpine, Texas and later danced in the streets of Tucson, Arizona to celebrate Charles Lindberg's solo flight over the Atlantic. Due to the 'Great Depression' she was unable to finish her teaching degree and married Raymond McKay, a Cowboy, rodeo Promoter and car salesman. They would have five children together: Claire, Frazer, Anne, Thomas and Vernon. Raymond lost both his parents shortly after birth and was raised by his grandmother, the grand lady and pioneer woman of Ft. Stockton, Texas, Annie Riggs. Many tourists to this very day visit the Annie Rigg's Museum in Ft. Stockton. Annie ran a famous boarding house in the 'Wild, Wild West' and married lawman and gunfighter, Barney Riggs. Raymond went in the Army for WW2 and after an Honorable discharge was hired in Silver City, New Mexico, as a salesman but met his fate there and Ermine and her children were left destitute. That sad event prompted a move to El Paso, Texas. In El Paso, Texas in 1942, Claire obtained employment and married James Sutton, a brave man who would rise to the ranks of Colonel in The United States Army. Meanwhile, Ermine became a dental assistant with the Stewart Brothers at the old Caples Building. Frazer, also known as "Bud McKay' would ride quarter horses at old Cowboy Park and make a name as a huge tough winner at only age fifteen. Bud would go on to have a successful jockey career before joining the United States Navy. In the early 1950's he made his mark as a "Match Race' rider and later became a horse trainer and farrier at tracks in New Mexico, Arizona and in Mexico. Late in life he became a co-creator of horse swimming horse therapy in Otay Mesa, California, Shep's Acres. Sadly, after a very successful year, he succumbed to illness and died. Anne McKay attended St. Margaret's School and later Alta Vista and The Loretta Academy. She eventually married Robert Bell of Pecos, Texas and raised two boys, Mark and J.D. Bell, real cowboys too. After being affectionately named the "Pecos Lady of Ladies" by her family and friends, Anne retired in Abilene, Texas. Tom was the fourth birth of Ermine and Raymond and after a less than healthy childhood, turned to hard work and sports to attempt a life of longevity. That he did and Tom also became good at sports and academics. He first took up boxing under the late Santos Quijano but had to work too and did so as a shoe shine boy at the El Paso downtown Plaza Park and as a dishwasher at the 'Pic N Shovel Cafe' while attending El Paso High Schools. Overall, Tom was a student at Saint Margaret's Orphanage Home, Burleson School, Alta Vista School, Austin High School, El Paso High School, Pampa, Texas High School, and finally Mar Vista High School at Chula Vista. But then Ermine remarried Stephen Hourigan (also born in Balmorhea, Texas as was Tom) and the family moved to Pampa, Texas. Two very successful son's were born to this marriage, Stephen Hourigan of El Paso, Texas and Timothy Hourigan of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Stephen is the owner of Insurance Associates in El Paso, Texas and Timothy is a retired Lt. Colonel from the United States Army. He and his wife, Donna, manage a small ranch in Las Cruces. Stephen's wife, Jackie, is a retired teacher. Vernon went in the navy and later became a grand businessman. He and his wife, Josephine, currently live in both Menifee, California and Las Vegas, Nevada. Ermines family did well in Pampa, Texas, and later back to El Paso, Texas where Stephen became a history teacher at Bowie High School and Ermine, teaching at St. Josephs Catholic School for years. An interesting note is that when son Thomas, a former United States Marine, decided to attend UTEP while a full time policeman on the El Paso Police Department, he picked up Ermine at her home and the two went to UTEP together. Eventually, Ermine obtained her teaching certification and taught for some twenty years. Meanwhile, Tom went on to a long career of coaching boxing and teaching science and having three very fantastic children, Michael, Leah, and Lesly McKay. Ermine was and is always remembered as the loving, caring, 'Solid Rock' of the McKay and Hourigan family.

Top Ten Seniors UTEP 1971
How fortunate I, Thomas W. McKay, was, to be selected for this superb honor in 1971. I started my college career at UTEP in 1968 at age thirty four I was an El Paso Policeman working a tiring 7.p.m. till 3 a.m. shift. I was also coaching Assumption School Sports, doing my part time job as owner and operator of Able Pest Control Company, Too, I had The Eastside Boxing Club in high gear with some talented youngsters. My plate was overloaded but somehow I managed to study diligently and be successful. Before engaging my desired teaching career, I was hired as Sergeant In Charge of Criminal Investigations for UTEP. When Chifef Jim Petzold left for another college job, I served as Interim Chief of Police. I then started my science and coaching career, I taught at Bowie High School. Coldwell School and Marion Manor before serving twenty four years at Austin High School. I specialized in science, health, coaching and education. In 1975 I obtained my Masters Degree from UTEP with a perfect 4.0 GPA. In the 1980's I was Head Boxing Coach for Ft. Bliss and in the middle 1980's, I was hired at Ft. Bliss to teach 'Rifted Vietnam Veterans' law enforcement classes and firearms training so they could qualify for a law enforcement job. The program was highly successful. Then in 1993, my boss at Ft. Bliss, Victor Villarreal, and myself sat for a chat about keeping boxing viable in the community. I came up with the suggestion of establishing a Boxing and Martial Arts Hall of Fames. Within a month, the deed was done and the hall of fames qualified as a 5001 (C3) business. To date we have had some fifteen banquets with a portion of the proceeds going to The Candlelighters of El Paso, a support group for children with cancer. I was recruited in 1996 by Principal Efren Ytturalde to put a science and boxing program in place at The Raymond Telles Academy. It was a one of a kind of special program designed for children with discipline or other related problems. I did the program for four years and received acclaim from many local and state agencies for the programs success. At age sixty six in the year 2000 I retired from EPISD as I was down with severe cancer. But what a blast I had and am still having in 2015 as I still coach boxing and tutor once in a while.

Sam Donaldson-1948 - El Paso, Texas
A photograph of Sam Donaldson as a Freshmen at Austin High School 1948. The marks on this image were done by Thomas McKay- one of his friends from Austin High School. "Donaldson was born in El Paso, Texas, the son of Chloe (née Hampson), a school teacher, and Samuel Donaldson, a farmer. He grew up on the family farm in Chamberino, New Mexico, which his father had bought in 1910, two years before New Mexico was admitted to the Union. He attended New Mexico Military Institute as well as Texas Western College (now known as University of Texas at El Paso) where he served as station manager of KTEP, the campus radio station, and joined the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. From 1956 to 1959, Donaldson served on active duty as an artillery officer in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Captain (USAR). While on active duty in 1958, Donaldson was one of the military observers of an atomic test in the Nevada testing grounds when an atomic device with a yield roughly equivalent to the bombs dropped on Japan was detonated three thousand yards away from the slit trench which protected the observers. Following military service, Donaldson was hired by KRLD-TV (now KDFW-TV), the then-CBS television affiliate in Dallas, Texas. After a year, he resigned and moved to New York City to look for a job in broadcast news. He failed to get one. He was hired by WTOP-TV (currently WUSA-TV) in Washington, D.C., in February 1961. He covered both local and national stories, including the Goldwater Presidential campaign in 1964, the Senate debates on the civil rights bill in March 1964, and the Medicare bill the next year. He anchored the 6 PM Saturday and Sunday evening newscasts with John Douglas doing the weather forecasts. " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Donaldson "Donaldson, 78, known for his tenacious questioning of presidents and political leaders over the years, has been on the front lines of American history in the almost 50 years that he has worked as a newsman in Washington, D.C. He covered the historic 1974 resignation of Richard Nixon and was just feet away when John Hinckley Jr. tried unsuccessfully to assassinate Ronald Reagan in 1981.
