50th Anniversary of NCAA Men's Basketball Championship
On March 19, 1966, coach Don Haskins’ Texas Western Miners scored a groundbreaking 72-65 victory over Kentucky to capture what remains, to this day, the only national championship won by a Division I men’s basketball team in the state of Texas. On that day future Hall of Famer Haskins became the first coach to start five African American players in the title game, in stark contrast to Kentucky’s all-white lineup.

Fifty years ago, a small school in West Texas quietly climbed the national collegiate basketball rankings. Against all odds, the team achieved the impossible: an NCAA title after starting five African-American players in the championship game. The win has been a point of pride for The University of Texas at El Paso ever since.
