Featherstone was part of the Richmond Light Infantry Blues, a National Guard unit that would have drilled regularly. When Guard units were called up in 1916, the Blues served as part of the Virginia Cavalry.

Gordonsville, Va.

Lt. Col. Featherstone served with the Richmond Light Infantry which was mustered into National Guard service as the First Virginia Cavalry. He later became a Regular Army officer stationed at Ft. Bliss.
