Newton Stewart Troop H 2nd from the left and Alvin Ash Troop G third from the right at Camp Wikoff, Long Iseland, NY, September 1898 both were part of Roosevelt's Rough Riders. Both become El Paso Police officers. Newton will died in the line of duty, and Ash will retire at the age of 70.
Two of the Southwest's famous lawmen of the 1890s - 1900s. Jeff Davis Milton, Texas Ranger, El Paso Police Chief, Wells Fargo guard, Customs Officer, Deputy Sheriff and Deputy US Marshal, and George Scarborough, Deputy US Marshal. Both were involved in the Martin M'Rose killing in El Paso, an incident that certainly tainted Scarborough's law enforcement career. Scarborough also killed John Selman and was himself mortally wounded in a gunbattle in 1900. Milton however lived a long life and died in 1947.
