She grew up in El Paso and attended Houston school before graduating Austin High. She attended Texas College of Mines (UTEP) for a short time before going to work for the Telephone Company. She married Al Adkins in 1946. She was involved in all activities of her children including scouting and sports. She moved with her family to Illinois in 1957 but returned to El Paso in 1970. She loved El Paso and was involved and held offices in many organizations including the El Paso County Historical Society.
